Oliveira Ag International – High Quality cashew nuts
Cashew trees grow best in sandy soils in a tropical climate. They need an average daily temperature of around 25C, with no danger of this falling below 10C. The trees – which are beautiful, with their large leaves, pink flowers and rosy red fruit – need a bit of water, but can cope with a level of drought. They grow quickly and easily, even in soils in which other fruit trees fail.
Cashew nuts themselves are really quite odd: they grow outside of the fruit and are technically the seeds of the cashew ‘apple’. They’re notoriously hard to harvest. Each cashew has two layers of hard shell, between which there are caustic substances – cardol and anacardic acid – that can cause nasty burns.
Vietnam has an ideal climate for growing cashews. It started cashew production in earnest in the 1980s and, a decade later, was a major player. The country now grows cashews over 300,000 ha and hasn’t actually got much more land to devote to the crop. Instead, it’s concentrating on boosting productivity and quality.
